Welcome to my blog. This is the first of what will be a regular series of postings about life at California Pacific Medical Center, the fun, the frustrations and challenges of running a major inner city hospital, and my thoughts on a variety of other issues, from health care reform to, well, anything that comes to mind!

So, you are probably asking, why is Warren writing a blog and, more importantly, why does he think I want to read what he has to say?

The first question is easier to answer. I’m writing this because I think our city and our nation are at a pivotal point in the way we think about health care; how we provide it, who gets it, who pays for it. I want this blog to be a place where we can have a frank conversation about all these issues, where I can express what I think and where you can reply and let me, and everyone else, know how you feel.

This is meant to be a dialogue, not a monologue, so I look forward to hearing from you, even if you don’t always agree with what I say.

As for why you would be interested in reading this, well, because when it comes to health care we are really all in this together. Sooner or later we all need it; one way or another we all pay for it. As a physician, a researcher, and now the CEO I have had a chance to see health care from many different perspectives, and to work with many different people. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do have a front row seat on many of the major changes that we face as a hospital and an industry, and I think part of my job should be to share what I see with you, whether you work for CPMC, are a patient here, or are just interested in health care in general.

We face some serious challenges in the year ahead. Solving them will require many skills, not the least of which is good communication. I hope this blog will be one way I can communicate what we are doing, why, and how it will impact everyone connected with CPMC. And I hope you will join me in making sure that communication is open and honest.

Warren BrownerWhat's it like to run a hospital spread out across San Francisco on six campuses and more than a dozen medical buildings? I'm starting to find out! This blog will share some of what I learn with you, and hopefully start a conversation about the best way to deliver the best care.
